Protest for the HPP in Kaçinar, Gjekmarkaj denounces violence against

Residents of the villages of Simon, Shperdhazë, Kaçinar, Arrëz, Shtuf and Kuzhnen, part of the Kaçinar Administrative Unit, have protested against the construction of 4 hydroelectric power plants on the Shperdhazë River.

Democratic MP Agron Gjekmarkaj, in a statement, calls on the authorities to suspend the concession of the hydropower plants in Kaçinar.

"This project poses a serious threat to the life and well-being of the community, as the river water is insufficient to simultaneously meet the needs for drinking water, irrigation and energy production. The implementation of this project would bring irreversible environmental and social consequences, including the drying up of water sources and the depopulation of the area."

According to residents and the documentation presented, the concession contract has been accompanied by numerous violations of applicable legislation, lack of transparency and lack of consultations with the community, in all its phases. Furthermore, the concession company, beyond all legal and contractual deadlines and after the expiration of environmental and water permits, has not carried out any work for more than a decade. Only recently, after a dubious extension of the construction permit, has preparatory work begun on the ground, in the absence of any transparency ,” writes Gjekmarkaj.

The Democratic MP has denounced the violence that was exercised against one of the residents of the area, who was protesting. Gjekmarkaj has shared several photos on Facebook showing the citizen with wounds to his head and arm.

"The situation has reached an unacceptable peak: company representatives have exercised physical violence against Mr. Kol Ndoji, a resident of the area, causing serious bodily injuries and sending him to the hospital. The incident occurred in the center of the city of Rrëshen, near the police station, a fact that raises great concerns for the functioning of the rule of law " concludes Gjekmarkaj.
