Can you protect Velina by serving Edi Rama?

By Armand Shkullaku

A three-day storm in a glass, which flares up every time Erion Veliaj hopes for a change in his arrest measure, has produced a comical situation, especially in some television studios, where the media and government media people complain and shout that the new justice system, and especially SPAK, are politically controlled by... the opposition.

According to them, these bodies are afraid when Berisha shouts and release their son-in-law and do not ask about Edi Rama when they arrest their own. This thesis, as ridiculous as it is hallucinatory, after yesterday's decision of the Supreme Court for Erion Velina, slid towards total discord while the latter's case was served as Duman's dictate on the majority, SPAK's double standard - tough on the Renaissance and tolerant of the opposition - and even as a clear sign of the failure of the justice reform.

That SPAK, like other organs of the new justice system, are politically controlled and directed, is already an evident fact. Even in the case of Erion Velië. But the comical situation mentioned above does not stem from this fact, but from the absurdity in which the defenders of the imprisoned mayor are entangled. They are with both Erion and Edi Rama. Unable to pronounce the simple truth that SPAK is politically controlled by the man who holds all the power in Albania, they have discovered that “our children’s heroes” are afraid when they curse Sali Berisha.

Most likely, the vast majority of the renaissance propagandists who articulate this thesis do not even believe it themselves. Some out of a kind of moral obligation towards Veliaj and some out of the hope of his return to office and consequently of easy payments, must say something in his defense. And the only solution, so that Veliaj can be served as much as possible and Rama is not hurt, is this of Berisha's political control over the new justice system.

The situation is not good at all and becomes even more ridiculous when those who claim this influence of Berisha on SPAK, the special courts and even the Supreme Court did not say a word when all these instances openly violated the constitution by taking a preventive measure against the leader of the opposition without the approval of the Assembly. Not even when he was deprived of the basic right of an elected official to be in the Assembly, isolated for a year in a row under house arrest. There was no talk of political control of justice even when a deputy was sentenced to prison for denouncing the drug-dealing brother of a Renaissance minister. Lovers of independent justice did not feel it even when the former prime minister and former president, suspected of crimes that occurred over a decade ago, was dragged and thrown into a cell. For many of them, it was even normal that SPAK would raid the offices of their colleagues and not those of the prime minister's party due to the patronage scandal.

The theory of SPAK's influence or complexification by Berisha sounds more paradoxical, when those who articulate it, even Veliaj himself, until his arrest had only one concern: would Rama release his dolphin or not? So they were convinced that his fate depended solely on the will of Edi Rama and not on the pressure of the opposition, which they mocked every time he protested in front of the City Hall. SPAK took Velina into "surrender" only after the maximum leader stripped him of political power, retouched him from public photographs and removed his media support. The fact is that for Velina, that three-day storm only happens in the second-tier media, which, unable to be players in the big field, have been content until yesterday with the cow of the City Hall. The big media treated the Veliaj case simply as news of the chronicle, knowing that such a sacrifice does not go without "permission from above".

The real game of control over SPAK has nothing to do with the personal fate of Velia, Ahemtaj or any other high-ranking official tomorrow. They are the heads that feed the long-term power of a single man. As long as SPAK and the new justice do not investigate the procedures of corrupt affairs, but women's underwear and bathroom tiles, the heads of the erjonveliras are simply statistics for Duman's reports. As long as SPAK and the new justice do not act against the gangs that massacre elections and officials who buy votes day in and day out, what does it matter who has the turn among Rama's friends.

Erion Velina can be presented as a victim of a prosecutor's anger, as revenge by Dumani or as a complication of justice by Berisha, but in the end everyone knows that he would not be in the cells of Durrës prison today without the will of one man. The one who controls everything, including those who are upset by the departure of the 'working man' who also thought about them.
