Trump returns to tariffs, as Europe seeks trade dialogue

US President Donald Trump issued new tariff notices for seven smaller trading partners on Wednesday as his administration moved closer to a deal with its largest trading partner, the European Union, Reuters reports .
Trump said in posts on his social media platform Truth that starting August 1 he would impose a 20% tariff on goods from the Philippines, 30% on goods from Sri Lanka, Algeria, Iraq and Libya, and 25% on Brunei and Moldova.

No letter was sent to the EU, but Trump said Tuesday he would issue "a minimum of seven" tariff notices Wednesday morning and more in the afternoon.

The latest letters add to 14 others issued earlier in the week, including 25% tariffs on powerful US suppliers South Korea and Japan, which will also take effect on August 1, in addition to any trade agreements reached before then.

They were released a day after Trump said he was expanding his trade war by imposing a 50% tariff on imported copper and would soon impose long-threatened taxes on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals. Trump's rapid tariff moves have cast a shadow over the global economic outlook, paralyzing business decision-making.
