Trump and Israeli commander warn: Gaza ceasefire could be near

Donald Trump and a key figure in the Israeli military have suggested that a ceasefire in Gaza could be close, Sky News reports .

Eyal Zamir, the chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), told Israeli media that "the conditions have been created to move forward with an agreement" to bring about an end to the fighting in the coastal territory and the release of the hostages.

In a televised speech, he said: "We have achieved many important results, we have caused great damage to Hamas' governance and military capabilities.

"Thanks to the operational strength we have demonstrated, the conditions have been created to move forward with an agreement on the release of the hostages."

This comes as US President Trump hosts Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington DC for a visit this week.

Mr. Trump said his meetings with Mr. Netanyahu were focused "primarily on Gaza."
