Albania experienced one of the longest heat waves of the last decade

During June and early July 2025, Europe was hit by two intense heat waves, which left behind a series of temperature records and extreme weather conditions.

The peak of the first wave was marked between June 17 and 22, while the second wave, stronger and more prolonged, occurred from June 30 to July 8, affecting most of Southern and Western Europe.

Southern Europe and the Balkans, including regions around Albania, recorded very strong "heat stress" values, with thermal sensations exceeding 38°C.

Albania was significantly affected by this extreme phenomenon. During the period June 20 – July 8, the country was engulfed by a severe heat wave, with a pronounced impact on coastal, low-lying and urban areas.

Maximum daily temperatures in many cities, such as Tirana, Durrës, Elbasan, and Gjirokastra, exceeded 39–40°C, peaking on July 7, which was the hottest day of this wave.

This heat wave was caused by a powerful high-pressure system known as a “heat dome” that brought clear, rainless days with strong solar radiation. It also saw tropical nights in some areas of Albania, where temperatures did not drop below 20°C, making it difficult to cool down at night and increasing the risk of heat-related health problems.

Meanwhile, in the rest of the continent, especially in Spain and Portugal, near-surface air temperatures reached 46°C. Northeast of Lisbon, the “feels like” temperature reached 48°C, an extreme heat stress.

For Western Europe, the second heat wave brought new records. On 30 June and 1 July, the average daily temperature for the region reached 24.9°C, the highest value ever recorded for the month of June. The monthly average for June 2025 in this area reached 20.49°C, 2.81°C above the 1991–2020 average, breaking the record held since 2003 for the first time.

Although Albania did not set any national historical records, the intensity and duration of this wave rank the period from June 20 to July 8 as one of the hottest of the last decade.
