The "last godfather" in serious condition, what is happening with

The Sicilian mafia boss, who was Italy's most wanted man until he was arrested in January, is currently too ill to remain in prison, according to his lawyers. They have demanded that Matteo Messina Denaro, once called "the last godfather of the Sicilian mafia", be transferred to the hospital.

The mafia boss was arrested by Italian police in the Sicilian town of Campobello di Mazara. What helped authorities find the elusive "boss of all bosses" was his illness.

In January, Messina Denaro was questioned by police as he was leaving a private clinic, where he had visited under the false name of Andrea Bonafede - the nephew of dead mafia boss Leonardo Bonafede.

For three decades, Messina Denaro avoided prison for his bloody crimes - but his illness is now a reason for the mob boss to be released from prison. According to his lawyers, the mafia boss has stage four cancer.

He underwent colon cancer surgery in 2020 and 2022, before his arrest. He is now serving a life sentence for a series of murders he either ordered or carried out between 1991 and 1992.

Messina Denaro has been sentenced under a provision known as "carcere duro" or "harsh prison regime", a measure aimed at controlling mafia bosses and involving the suspension of normal prison regulations and the complete isolation of detainees. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that his prison regime is comparable to torture.
