Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha commemorated the martyrs of April 2, 1991, today at a ceremony in Shkodra.

In his speech, Berisha honored Arben Broci, Bujar Bishanaku, Nazmi Kryeziu and Besnik Ceka, as well as dozens of citizens injured in that tragic event.

He described April 2 as a key moment in the fight against dictatorship and recalled that their sacrifice had a great international resonance.

Excerpt from the speech of the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha:

Dear parents and family members of the martyrs of free voting, Arben Broci, Bujar Bishanaku, Nazmi Kryeziu and Besnik Ceka.

Dear citizens of Shkodra, dear Mr. Luçiano Boçi, vice president of the Democratic Party and political leader of this region.

Mrs. Eliona Shkreli, chairwoman of the Democratic Party.

Honorable deputies and candidates for deputies of the Democratic Party of Shkodra district.

Today we are here to express our deepest respect, our boundless gratitude for the martyrs of free voting.

The true heroes of Shkodra and all of Albania.

Arben Brocin, founder of pluralism and the Democratic Party.

Bujanar Bishanakun, prominent activist.

Nazmi Kryeziu, prominent activist of the DP, and Besnik Cekën, prominent activist of this party.

But we also honor 87 citizens of Shkodra, who were injured on that day of massacre, which Shkodra had never recorded in recent memory.

On April 2, 1991, the last Stalinist dictator in Europe, Ramiz Alia, who had accepted pluralist elections, decided to celebrate the stolen victory in Albania's elections with the blood of the youth of Shkodra under the motive that power wants blood, that power comes from blood.

Bloodthirsty as they were, they proved to Shkodra and Albania that as internal invaders, they were no different from other invaders.

Even though they had infidelity and cruelty in their souls, they did not hesitate to wash this blessed city with blood.

Dear friends, the sublime sacrifice of the martyrs of free voting, the dozens and dozens of citizens of Shkodra who were injured that day, had extraordinary international repercussions.

It aroused revolt, the harsh condemnation of the entire European democratic public, the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the US Congress.

Truly, the martyrs of free voting passed away that day, but remained immortal in the spirit of freedom, in the free vote.

Therefore, today they are a source of light, a source of inspiration for every citizen who believes in freedom and its vote.

The martyrs of April 2 are a great inspiration for every citizen to sacrifice for their freedom and vote.
