State work still attractive in 2024, DAP: 17.6 applicants for one job!

Work in administration continues to be coveted by a significant portion of individuals and the average number of applications for a job increased in 2024.

Data from the Department of Public Administration shows that on average in the past year there were 17.55 applications for a job, marking an increase compared to the average of the previous year 2023 when there were 13.5.

"Data for 2024 shows that there were an average of about 17.55 applications per position, based on 26,502 applications in total, for 1,510 advertised positions," the DAP annual report states.

The same also dwells on the fact of why this indicator is important, underlining that a high number of applicants for a position indicates to some extent the acceptability of the civil service and the confidence of applicants in fair and merit-based competition procedures.

"On the other hand, it could also be an indication of minimal admission criteria or very general criteria in some cases. Another reason could be that candidates apply without paying attention to the criteria, making several applications at the same time."

There are several reasons that could lead to a significant value for this indicator, and data analysis, combined with other indicators, would be valuable. For example, combined with the percentage of pre-selected applicants, i.e. those who meet the announced criteria, this indicator could help the administration understand how certain policies or initiatives could affect the values of this indicator,” the report states.

The administration has been subjected year after year to a series of policies for increasing salaries, one of the most important of which, and which included a good part of it, took place last year under the promise of an average salary of 900 euros.

Focusing on a more detailed analysis by type of procedure, the report estimates that the average number of applicants for the civil service admission procedure in the executive category was 20.3.

For the parallel movement procedure 1.3. The promotion procedure results in an average of 3 applicants, while the admission procedure from outside the civil service in the lower and middle management category results in an average of 31.5 applicants.

"Out of 26,502 applications in total, 54% of them qualified to continue the procedures, after meeting the criteria for the announced positions. The average number of qualified applicants per job position was 9.4. It also results that the average number of applications per applicant during 2024 was 5.76," the DAP estimates./Monitor
