Student in Italy dies after eating a sandwich and developing an allergy

An American student, Avarie Anne Tierney, 21, died on Wednesday afternoon in Rome after an allergic reaction to a sandwich she had bought at a restaurant in the Pigneto area. Tierney, who was allergic to cashew nuts, was with some friends at a center for students attending Erasmus courses when, shortly after consuming the sandwich, she began to feel unwell and collapsed in anaphylactic shock.

Her friends quickly intervened and helped her return to her apartment, where they gave her a dose of Bentelan to cope with the symptoms. However, her condition worsened and she suffered a heart attack. Despite doctors' efforts to save her with cardiac massage and artificial respiration, the student did not survive.

Investigators suspect that Avarie Anne Tierney may not have informed the restaurant waiters about her nut allergy because she did not speak Italian. They are currently awaiting autopsy results to fully clarify the cause of death.

This shocking incident has raised concerns about the safety of consumers with allergies and the importance of proper communication in restaurants.
