Space debris increases, a danger to satellites

There are 1.2 million pieces of space debris orbiting the Earth. According to a report by the European Space Agency (ESA), 50,000 of them are larger than 10 cm in size, are located at an altitude of 550 km and pose a threat to active satellites orbiting the planet.

The dangers are constantly multiplied by collisions between them that bring about further fragmentation. According to ESA models, the fragmentations that occurred in 2024 have increased the debris in orbit by at least 3 thousand.

Cleaning up Earth's orbit is becoming an increasingly important safety challenge for future missions to the Moon. For this reason, the European Space Agency has approved the Zero Debris Approach program, which foresees a significant reduction through a series of measures to limit debris in the atmosphere by 2030.
