Trump announces new global tariffs: Albania included with a base tariff of 10%

US President Donald Trump announced a new package of trade tariffs today on what he called "Liberation Day", a new effort to restore the United States' trade balance with the rest of the world.

During a live conference call from Washington, Trump announced the imposition of a 10% base tariff on all imported goods, including those coming from countries like Albania, which are not part of any separate trade agreement with the US.

The new tariffs, according to Trump, aim for trade reciprocity, punishing those countries that, according to him, have benefited from the American market for decades without offering equal conditions for American products.

"Today we restore fairness to global trade. We will no longer tolerate the injustices that have harmed our workers and our industries," Trump declared.

In addition to the base tariff, some countries face special tariffs, based on the level of tariffs they impose on American goods. Some of these include:

United Kingdom – 10%

Cambodia, Laos, Madagascar – over 45%.

A special tariff of 25% has been imposed on all imports of vehicles and their parts, particularly hitting European and Asian car manufacturers.

For Albania, the general tariff of 10% will be applied on all exports to the US, including products such as textiles, clothing, and agricultural products that are exported in limited quantities.

International experts and US trading partners have warned of severe consequences for the global economy and rising prices for American consumers. Officials from the European Union and Canada have signaled they will consider retaliatory measures.

President Trump, meanwhile, said that the revenue from these tariffs would be used to reduce taxes for American citizens and pay down the national debt./ Monitor
