Hamza: The opening of the bridge over the Iber River should be coordinated with NATO and Kosovo's allies

The mayor of the municipality of South Mitrovica, Bedri Hamza, says that the opening of the main bridge over the river Ibër in Mitrovica must be carried out in coordination with NATO and Kosovo's strategic allies.

In an interview for the Voice of America, he said that actions that could lead to tension in the situation should be avoided. "There must be cooperation, coordination and coordination with NATO, which has its own troops within KFOR, with the embassies in Kosovo, with the diplomacy of friendly countries in order not to cause a situation that instead of having progress to move into regression and face a situation which would then block the bridge for movement for a longer time", he said.

Mr. Hamza said that the issue of the bridge was a topic in the meetings he had with American officials during his stay in Washington.

Authorities in Kosovo on Monday closed Serbia's post offices in the north and on Thursday began testing the stability of the main bridge over the Iber that marks the Mitrovica dividing line, in preparation for opening it to car traffic, amid objections from KFOR and western diplomats.

The government of Kosovo says that the opening of the bridge would be a symbol of the normalization of inter-ethnic relations between the north inhabited by a Serbian majority and the south by an Albanian majority.

Voice of America: Your city is again in the spotlight after the Kosovo government's plans to open the main bridge over the Iber River to cars. Should the bridge be opened for vehicle traffic, what is your opinion?

Bedri Hamza: The bridge is open for pedestrians, but it should also be opened for vehicles. But there must be cooperation, coordination and coordination with other factors, in this case also with NATO, which has its own troops within KFOR, with the embassies in Kosovo, with the diplomacy of friendly countries in order to do not cause a situation where instead of progress we move in regression and where we can have and face a situation which would then block the bridge for movement for a longer time.

Therefore, the bridge, we know its role, is to facilitate traffic, to move people, capital ideas, in the southern part of the city of Mitrovica, it is open, everyone is welcome to pass there, they are welcome to visit, to do business in Mitrovica, to drink coffee in Mitrovica, regardless of ethnicity and in this direction we must contribute to have an extension of the situation, a creation of conditions to have a normality in this part of Kosovo and anyway we must we are closely coordinated and cooperate to have the support of our strategic partners in this regard.

Zëri i Amerikës: A u shtrua çështja e urës në takimet tuaja këtu në Uashington dhe cili ishte mesazhi i zyrtarëve amerikanë?

Bedri Hamza: Unë kam patur takime të nivelit të lartë, mjaft të dobishme, produktive në Shtëpinë e Bardhë, Këshillin e Sigurisë Kombëtare, në Departamentin amerikan të Shtetit, ku kemi biseduar me personalitete të larta të administratës amerikane dhe një prej temave sigurisht që ka qenë edhe çështja e urës. Ëshë i qartë qëndrimi i partnerëve tanë strategjikë, që kjo çështje duhet të shkojë në partneriteti dhe në pajtueshmëri me KFORI-n, me NATO-n, me partnerët tanë strategjikë, Shtetet e Bashkuara të Amerikës dhe vendet e Bashkimit Europian, jo të prodhohet në një situatë ku realisht mund të kemi tensione dhe realisht të kemi zhvillime të cilat e dëmtojnë më pas këtë çështje.

Zëri i Amerikës: Qeveria e kryeministrit Albin Kurti thotë se hapja e urës nënkupton zbatim të marrëveshjes së arritur në Bruksel dhe veprimet si ai për mbylljen e degëve të Postës së Serbisë në veri, janë pjesë e shtrirjes së sovranitetit në atë pjesë. A nuk ishte ky qëllimi edhe i qeverisë suaj dhe qeverive të tjera të Kosovës?

Bedri Hamza: Po sovraniteti, po tërësia territoriale e Republikës së Kosovës, integriteti, karakteri unitar i shtetit, rendi dhe ligji, mirëpo për çështje të caktuara duke ditur që për sigurinë në Kosovë garanton edhe NATO përmes trupave që i ka të KFOR-it, ne duhet të dakordohemi edhe me partnerët tanë strategjikë, do të thotë, nuk ka dilema rreth sovranitetit, tërësisë territoriale dhe zbatimit të ligjit, por në tema të caktuara duhet të kemi partneritet dhe bashkërendim.

Zëri i Amerikës: Pas dështimit të nismës për të patur zgjedhje të parakohshme përmes një marrëveshjeje të të gjitha forcave politike si është situata sot? A ka ndonje nismë për zgjedhje të parakoshme apo do bëhen në kohën e rregullt?

The president of the country has invited the political parties to consultations and the possible dates are January 26 and February 16. We expect the President to come out with an exact date for holding the elections, in a regular period. There was an initiative to go to early elections in Kosovo. Actually, the party in power has declared that it is ready, but in the end, when we as the Democratic Party gave support for the dissolution of the Assembly, there was a hesitation, an unwillingness from the party in power to go to early elections that were planned in June or early July. That is why we expect the elections to be within the regular legal and constitutional deadline and we are preparing to do as well as possible in the elections and we are optimistic that we will have a good result.
