US President Donald Trump has congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as the new Pope of the Catholic Church, expressing his excitement over the fact that for the first time in history, an American is taking the helm of the Holy See.
Through a post on social media, Trump described this event as a great honor for his country, underlining the historical significance of the election of Pope Leo XIV.
"Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is a great honor to know that he is the first American Pope. What a thrill and what a great honor for our country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very significant moment!" Trump wrote.
Robert Francis Prevost was elected earlier in the day in a Conclave held at the Vatican, taking the papal name Leo XIV. He succeeds Pope Francis, who died on April 21, 2025.
