EU calls on Israel to lift humanitarian blockade in Gaza

EU calls on Israel to lift humanitarian blockade in Gaza

Senior European Union officials have reiterated calls for an immediate lifting of the humanitarian blockade in the Gaza Strip and warned Israel about a new plan to change the aid system.

"As the occupying power, Israel is obliged by international law to guarantee the delivery of humanitarian aid to the population in need," said the chief for foreign policy, Kaja Kallas, the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, and the Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Suica, through a joint statement.

The statement also called for a ceasefire and the immediate release of hostages, while concern was also expressed about the new aid system approved by Israel on May 4.

According to the EU, the new system curtails humanitarian principles by shifting the distribution of aid to non-humanitarian actors and private security firms – a move that has also been criticized by the United Nations and aid groups.
