Xanax is sold freely without a prescription, doctor: Alarming! Addiction just

One of the most legally controlled drugs, Xanax, is being sold without a prescription in several pharmacies in the capital.

The novel brought this concern that is happening in our country to everyone's attention for the umpteenth time. Xanax is the market name for alprazolam, a type of drug in the group known as benzodiazepines, or 'benzos', which are usually prescribed by doctors to treat anxiety syndrome.

Journalists from the investigative show "Fiks Fare" have managed to easily purchase this medication in three different pharmacies in Tirana, without a prescription, check or medical verification.

In the first case, the pharmacist did not ask for a prescription, but only asked the customer what dosage he wanted: 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg. The same situation was repeated in two other pharmacies. In all three cases, the discussion focused only on the price, which ranged from 50 to 100 lek per tablet, and not on the necessity of a medical prescription, as required by law.

Psychiatrist Ariana Rreli, contacted by journalists, describes this situation as alarming. She explains that taking Xanax without a prescription and without medical supervision is very dangerous. "This medicine creates a strong addiction, just like drugs. Even when prescribed by general practitioners, it should be made very clear to patients that its use can lead to physical and psychological addiction," the doctor said.

Rreli also brought up a shocking case of a pharmacist who had developed such a strong addiction to Xanax that she had managed to consume up to 37 tablets a day. “The treatment for overcoming addiction to this medication is long and specialized,” she adds.

On the other hand, the President of the Order of Pharmacists, Mr. Dëfrim Goma, confirms that the sale of Xanax without a prescription is a serious legal violation, which is punishable by fines starting from 100 thousand lekë. “The measures are imposed by the National Medicines Agency, while the Order of Pharmacists, after identifying the violations, sends the cases to the disciplinary commission,” said Goma.  Top Channel
