Shameful at the University of Salento: The word "femicide" is hidden

An act of vandalism has shocked the University of Salento, where the memorial plaque dedicated to Ilaria Sula, the 22-year-old Albanian student who was brutally murdered in Rome by her ex-boyfriend, Mark Samson, was damaged.

The incident happened in one of the teaching classrooms of this university, specifically in the "Studium 6" room, where a symbolic plaque was placed in honor of Ilaria. The plaque read:

"This chair is reserved for Ilaria Sula, killed by femicide. She should have been in class today, too."
However, the word "femicide" – which emphasizes the gender motive of the crime – was erased with a black pen, leaving behind a clear trace of vandalism with an implicit message.

Strong reactions from the university and the family
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (DISUS) of the University of Salento reacted immediately through a statement on social networks, describing this action as a serious violation of the memory of the victim and all women killed by gender-based violence.

"This gesture is in deep contradiction to the values of respect, inclusion and civic responsibility that inspire our daily activity. The fight against gender-based violence is a concrete commitment for us," the reaction states.
The incident has also deeply affected Ilaria's family. Her father, Flamur Sula, has reacted publicly with pain and anger:

"I feel sorry for Ilaria... are insulting her memory and that of other girls killed like her. I am speechless. Unfortunately, there are such people in this world."
Widespread public reaction This act of vandalism has caused widespread indignation in public opinion and on social networks, bringing to attention the tragedy of Ilaria and the need for deeper awareness on gender-based violence, not only in Italy, but also throughout Europe.
