May 11th Elections, Mediu: The Electoral System Was Unacceptable

The leader of the Republican Party, Fatmir Mediu, spoke about the May 11 elections, where the SP received 83 mandates, while the PD-ASHM only 50.

Invited to News 24, Mediu raised serious concerns about the level of influence of organized crime in Albanian politics and the lack of free elections.

He said that "Berisha and the entire opposition have taken a stance related to the fate of the country: will we be a country where parliament decides on the future, or criminal groups?"

Mediu emphasized that the warnings coming from the United States regarding the fight against drug cartels show that crime has reached such levels that it endangers political life and national security.

The PR leader also harshly criticized the current electoral system, describing it as unfair and exclusionary.

"The electoral system was unacceptable to me and I have said it before, I did not vote for it with the conviction that in a political race you cannot create two layers, patriarchs and plebeians where the latter collect votes for those at the top and take what is left. Parliament is elected by the citizens. A clear relationship with the citizens is needed," he said.
