Anemia increases in the population

As globally, the prevalence of anaemia in the population is increasing in Albania. Nearly half of children up to 6 years old in Albania have acquired anemia, or in other words, iron deficiency. Young girls and one in three women of reproductive age are also facing this problem.

"Our data is comparable to global data. In pilot studies it has been observed that in early childhood, up to the age of starting school, 40–50% of children are anemic – but with mild to somewhat moderate anemia. We used to have more cases of severe anemia. Even adolescents are more affected by anemia due to iron deficiency," said Manika Face Kreka, a doctor at the Oncohematology Service, QSUT.

Malnutrition and viruses are the factors that most affect the worsening of anemia.

"Children are being profiled towards ready-made foods and any infection or virus they pass further deepens the anemia," said the doctor.

Anemia is associated with symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.

"A child with anemia is sluggish, more aggressive, unfocused," said the doctor.

According to the WHO, anemia affects children's school performance and productivity in adult life, bringing economic losses to families./tvklan
