At least 150 dead in Nigeria floods

At least 150 dead in Nigeria floods

151 people died after a commercial town in north-central Nigeria was flooded by torrential rains this week, local officials said.

Heavy rains that began falling early on Thursday flooded the town of Mokwa, a major commercial and transportation hub west of Abuja, where traders buy beans, onions and other food, Skynews writes .

The flood destroyed parts of roads and bridges and left some buildings almost completely underwater.

On Friday, the death toll rose rapidly from 21 to more than 100.

As search efforts continued on Saturday, the number rose again to 151, said Niger's state emergency service spokesman, Ibrahim Audu Husseini.

This caused even more suffering, injuring at least 11 people and displacing more than 3,000 people, while some are still missing.
