Evis Berberi remains in prison, GJKKO rejects request for easing security

The former director of the Albanian Road Authority (ARRSH), Evis Berberi, will continue to remain in detention, after the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO) rejected his request for a more lenient security measure.

Berberi was arrested in March 2024 as part of an investigation launched by SPAK into allegations of abuses with public tenders while he was heading the ARRSH. The Special Prosecution Office suspects that the former head of the ARRSH favored a company linked to his personal interests, awarding it tenders in violation of the law on conflict of interest and public procurement rules.

In the same decision, the GJKKO also rejected the request for the release from prison of Valter Begaj, Berber's suspected partner and collaborator in the embezzlement of public funds scheme.

Both are accused of the criminal offenses: "Abuse of office", "Violation of equality in tenders" and "Passive corruption".

According to sources from SPAK, the investigations are based on seized documentation and financial analysis that reveal direct links between ARA officials and companies that have won tenders with significant values.
