Iran rejects US demand for uranium enrichment

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on June 4 that Tehran will not give up uranium enrichment, rejecting a key US demand aimed at resolving the long-running nuclear dispute. He said a halt to uranium enrichment is against Iran's interests.

The US proposal for a new nuclear deal was presented to Iran on Saturday by Oman, which is mediating talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

After five rounds of talks, several key issues remain unresolved, including Iran's insistence on continuing uranium enrichment and Tehran's refusal to remove existing stocks of highly enriched uranium, which is a potential material for making nuclear bombs.

“Uranium enrichment is key to our nuclear program and our enemies are focused on enrichment ,” Khamenei said in a televised speech. The US proposal “contradicts our state’s belief in self-sufficiency and the principle of ‘we can,’” he said.

"America's rude and arrogant leaders constantly demand that we should not have a nuclear program. Who are they to decide whether Iran should have enrichment," he added.

Tehran has said it wants to perfect nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and has long denied accusations by Western powers that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

US President Donald Trump has resumed his "maximum pressure" campaign against Tehran since returning to the White House in January. This campaign includes sanctions but also threats to bomb Iran if talks fail to produce a deal.

During his first term in 2018, Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal that Tehran reached with six world powers. The US reimposed crippling sanctions that have crippled Iran's economy. Tehran responded by enriching uranium beyond limits set in the nuclear deal./ REL
