Journalists were censored by Spiropali, AGSH: Fraud and institutional propaganda

The Journalists' Association of Albania has reacted to the censorship of journalists by the Speaker of Parliament Elisa Spiropali, regarding the latter's conference.

In an official reaction, the Journalists' Association of Albania says that the Parliament's refusal to allow journalists to ask questions is not only an institutional deception against journalists, but also a form of evasion of public responsibility.

According to AGSH, a one-way communication, without the opportunity to ask questions, is not a press conference, but propaganda.

"June 5, 2025
On the restriction of the right to ask questions at the “press conference” of the Speaker of the Assembly, Ms. Elisa Spiropali
The Journalists' Association of Albania expresses its deep concern about the way in which the “press conference” of the Speaker of the Assembly, Ms. Elisa Spiropali, was held today at the premises of the Presidency of the Assembly.
In the official announcement distributed to the media, on June 4 and with another announcement on June 5, it was clearly emphasized that it was a press conference with journalists, creating the legitimate expectation that questions would be allowed. However, at the end of her “conference”, Ms. Spiropali suddenly announced that “this was a statement and not a press conference”, not accepting any questions from the journalists present.
This behavior is not only an institutional deception towards journalists, but a form of evasion from public responsibility. A one-way communication, without the opportunity to ask questions, is not a press conference. It is propaganda.
AGSH stresses that the Albanian Parliament, as the highest representative institution, has an obligation to guarantee transparency and full accountability to the public.
Refusal to take questions in a format announced as a “press conference” constitutes a dangerous precedent for institutional communication standards and media freedom.
We call on the Speaker of the Parliament to immediately restore normality in relations with the media and to fully respect the role of journalists as guarantors of truth and public interest.."
