Promise for votes... Tax Director: Fiscal peace was misunderstood, entities will

Shortly before the May 11 elections, the government announced the "Fiscal Peace" initiative, which provides for the cancellation of tax liabilities accumulated for more than 10 years and the partial forgiveness of 5- to 10-year liabilities.

But it seems that this was simply an empty pre-election promise to garner votes.

The Director General of Taxation, Ilir Binaj, said on Top Channel that the fiscal peace initiative is not related to the obligation that individuals and businesses have to pay current taxes.

"We cannot say what may have delayed it, but I believe it may have been a misconception about when fiscal peace will happen or when the forgiveness of tax obligations will happen. It has not happened yet, we are waiting. We will inform you again. The forgiveness was for interest on arrears, for fines, but not for obligations. Taxpayers must understand that they must pay them in order not to face unnecessary austerity measures," says Binaj.

Binaj even announced that an electronic system will be built together with banks to block bank accounts, as a further measure for entities that do not repay their obligations on time, even after notifications have been made.

"One measure we are implementing is the establishment of a digital system, which would facilitate and accelerate the blocking and unblocking of accounts for entities that do not pay on time. But the effort to collect the debt is ongoing and the increase has been manageable by the tax administration ," he adds.
