Turkish court jails five mayors of largest opposition party

A Turkish court on Monday ordered the detention of five mayors from the Republican People's Party (CHP), three of whom are district mayors in Istanbul. A party spokesman confirmed the news.

Seventeen other people, who were also arrested over the weekend, including deputy mayors of Istanbul districts, were also remanded in custody on corruption charges. In addition to Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who has been in prison since late March, eight mayors in Istanbul belonging to the CHP have been arrested and detained since late October.

According to observers, the government is trying to weaken the CHP, which emerged victorious in the spring 2024 local elections against the Islamist-conservative Justice and Development Party (AKP) of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The CHP, which had managed to hold Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, Turkey's three largest cities, had also increased its strength in the most conservative provinces and had won 26 of the 39 municipal districts of Istanbul, Turkey's economic capital. The arrest on March 19 of Ekrem Imamoglu, who is considered President Erdogan's most important opponent, had caused a huge wave of controversy in the country.
