A farm in Postribë, Shkodra, is quarantined, small livestock infected,

A farm in the village of Domen in the Postribë administrative unit has been placed in quarantine following an outbreak of an unknown disease that has affected small livestock, mainly goats.

Zamir Milani, the farm owner, is worried that he has lost three goats, while another farmer in the area has reported the death of six others. Milani says there is evidence that the disease has also spread to sheep, but he says many farmers are reluctant to speak out, fearing it could affect livestock sales for Eid al-Adha.

"I invested 600 thousand lek to set up the farm and spent over 40 thousand lek on medicine, but to no avail. We have not yet received an answer about what is happening," he said.

Inspectors from the Regional Veterinary Directorate have arrived at the farm, who have quarantined it until the situation is clarified. Inspector Muhamet Bisho announced that samples have been taken and the analyses will be urgently sent to the Veterinary Reference Institute in Tirana, as it is not yet known exactly what disease has affected the animals.

Meanwhile, the movement and trade of livestock in the Shkodra area continues to be a major concern for farmers themselves. Many of them point out that they have no other alternatives to secure income, while the lack of animal registration increases the risk of disease spread.

Veterinary authorities have called for increased caution and for the movement of animals to be stopped until the test results are available.
