'Justice for Hamid': Activists protest against Gjadri camp

The suicide of a Moroccan immigrant in a prison in Italy, after more than a month in the Gjadri camp in Lezha, has caused strong reactions from human rights organizations and activists.

Touched by this case, Albanian and foreign activists gathered in front of the camp premises in Gjadra on Sunday, where they paid homage to the deceased and held a symbolic protest to denounce the inhumane conditions in which, according to them, the migrants are being held.

Activists demanded an independent investigation into the case of 42-year-old Hamid Badoui, while denouncing other incidents that are occurring every day within this structure.

"Justice for Hamid" and "Freedom for migrants" were some of the slogans, while bouquets of flowers were placed at the entrance to the camp.

Kristina Millona, a human rights activist, stated that such centers only produce despair.

"Hamid was one of the unfortunate boys forcibly escorted to these camps, in Gjadra. Imprisoned and released after a month and three days, he returned to Italy, but his freedom did not last long. Locked behind bars again and for fear of being returned to Gjadra, Hamidi ended his life tragically," said Millona, comparing the Gjadra camp to the infamous Guantanamo prison.

The Gjadri camp was built by the Italian government after an agreement with Prime Minister Rama and is currently serving to isolate immigrants who have been denied the right to asylum and who risk returning to their country of origin.

The suicide of the 42-year-old Moroccan has brought to attention concerns previously expressed by international organizations about the management of refugees in Albania.

"Reports speak of 40 incidents in the first month within Gjadra. We urgently demand the cessation of transfers to Albania, the release of all migrants in Gjadra, and an independent investigation into institutional responsibilities," Millona declared during the protest.

The center has been expanded. It is also serving as a center for migrants whose asylum applications have been rejected and who are expected to be deported to their countries of origin. / BIRN
