May 11th Elections, Tabaku: A Missed Opportunity for Albania and a Failed Test

The Chairwoman of the European Affairs Committee in the Albanian Parliament and Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, described the May 11 election process as a failure for democracy and a missed opportunity for Albania, at a key moment for European integration.

During the first meeting of the Commission after the elections, Tabaku stated that the electoral process, the first to take place after the opening of negotiations with the European Union, should have been a test of new political behavior and increased democratic standards. But according to her, the opposite happened.

"Unfortunately, the elections were neither free nor fair. The preliminary OSCE/ODIHR report clearly highlighted the pressure on public administration, the use of state resources, and the close connection between the state and the ruling party," Tabaku declared.

The Democratic MP emphasized that the country did not make progress, but rather took steps backward towards consolidating institutions and functional democracy.

"It does not matter how many chapters or groups of chapters are opened in negotiations. What matters is improving standards and respecting democracy in practice," Tabaku added, referring to the European Commission's report on Cluster 1, which includes the rule of law and fundamental rights.

According to her, the problems highlighted in the elections, along with the malfunctioning of democratic institutions, could become a serious obstacle to the country's European journey.

Finally, Tabaku stressed the need for the Assembly to reflect on the OSCE/ODIHR report and to hold itself accountable. She called for serious engagement in restoring democratic standards, especially at an important diplomatic moment for Albania in the context of the EU integration process.
