A hospital in Hamburg, Germany, catches fire, killing three patients

Three patients have died and dozens more have been injured after a fire at a hospital in the city of Hamburg, Germany.

The fire broke out in a room in the geriatric ward of the Marienkrankenhaus early Sunday. 

Skynews reports that the fire started on the ground floor and spread to the floor above, with smoke affecting most of the four-story building. 

Firefighters were notified just after midnight.

They said they found several patients calling for help from windows and some people were rescued using ladders.

Three adults died and more than 30 were injured in the fire, German news agency dpa said.

One of the injured is in critical condition, while 18 others have serious injuries and 15 have minor injuries, the agency added.
