PSG victory celebrations turn into tragedy, two dead, over 500 arrested

Two people have died, hundreds have been arrested and cars have been burned in France overnight as football fans celebrated Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League victory.

The epicenter of the euphoria was in Paris, where fans paraded in cars, sang in the streets and set off fireworks, following PSG's 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in Munich.

France's Interior Ministry said 491 people were arrested in Paris after clashes between fans and police.

Across France, including Paris, a total of 599 arrests have been made, the ministry said.

Two people died during the celebrations.

A man riding a scooter in Paris died after being hit by a car. In the town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death as a crowd gathered to celebrate PSG's victory, prosecutors said.

He died “during celebrations,” the prosecutor’s office said, but did not say whether his death was directly linked to the Champions League final. The statement said the suspect “is at large.”

The Interior Ministry said 18 police officers were injured in Paris, and three others in other parts of France, as fans took to the streets to celebrate. Seven firefighters were also injured.

Authorities reported that 692 fires were reported overnight, including 264 cars that burned down.

The PSG team will parade through Paris on Sunday, where tens of thousands of supporters of the football team are expected to gather to celebrate their Champions League victory./ REL
