Russia, the first country in the world to recognize the Taliban government

Russia has become the first country to officially recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan, a step that Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has called a "bold" decision.

Muttaqi met in Kabul on Thursday with the Russian ambassador to Afghanistan, Dmitry Zhirnov, who officially communicated his government's decision to recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, writes the BBC.

According to the Afghan Foreign Minister, this step marks "a new phase of positive relations, mutual respect and constructive cooperation," while adding that this decision will serve as an "example" for other countries.

Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban have sought international recognition and investment, despite growing reports of human rights abuses.

In an official statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said: "We believe that the act of official recognition of the government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will give an impetus to the development of productive bilateral cooperation between our countries.
