From classmates to parents of 3 children/ The inspiring love story of Diogo Jota

Just 12 days ago, Diogo Jota and Rute Cardoso celebrated their "dream come true" and said "I do" after meeting for the first time as teenagers.

Now, however, with the wedding photos still fresh, newlywed Rute, 28, is facing a life with their three young children that she probably never could have imagined, a life without her childhood sweetheart.

Diogo and his brother André Silva died on Thursday when the Lamborghini they were travelling in veered off the road and burst into flames.

Diogo and Rute first met in high school in Porto and began dating in October 2012, with their more than decade-long love story documented on Rute's social media.

Rute had been by her boyfriend's side throughout all of his sporting achievements, with the player making his debut at the age of 18 for Pacos de Ferreira's senior team in 2014 and signing for Atletico Madrid at the age of 20.

They seemed to be enjoying life in Britain, with Ruten often sharing updates online about their lives, which in 2020 led them to the club Liverpool. Away from the pitch, 2020 was a big year for the couple as just a month before Diogo signed for Liverpool, they announced they were expecting their first child together.

In February 2021, their son Dinis was born, with Rute sharing many photos of herself and her little one cheering on Diogo's games.

Two years later, in March 2023, Rute and Diogo welcomed another little boy into the family, a boy they named Duarte, with photos of Rute showing her blossoming into life as a mother of two.

The following year, their daughter was born in November 2024.

On June 22, 2025, Diogo and Rute crowned their love in a wedding ceremony in their hometown of Porto. "A day we will never forget," he said.
