Albania with fewer requests for asylum and Albanian citizenship in 2024

In 2024, Albania recorded a decrease of over 60% in the number of asylum seekers, compared to the previous year.

Only 104 people applied for asylum, down from 261 in 2023, with the majority coming from Afghanistan (27.9%), Syria (17.3%) and Pakistan (10.6%).

Meanwhile, the acquisition and renunciation of Albanian citizenship also marked a decline. 919 people acquired citizenship in 2024, a decrease of 33.5% compared to 2023, while 472 people renounced it, 45.7% less than the year before.

More than half of the citizenship beneficiaries are of Kosovo origin, while the dominant age group was 30–39 years old.

According to the Instat announcement, the months with the most applications were March, April and June, which account for 57.7% of total applications.

Acquiring and renouncing Albanian citizenship

In 2024, 919 people obtained Albanian citizenship, marking a decrease of 33.5% compared to 2023.

Meanwhile, 472 people have renounced Albanian citizenship, marking a decrease of 45.7%, compared to 2023.

Analyzing the country of origin of persons who have acquired Albanian citizenship, it is noted that:

o 49.1% are originally from Kosovo;

o 13.8% originating from Turkey;

o 6.2% originating from North Macedonia.

During 2024, 33.4% of people who have acquired Albanian citizenship and 41.3% who have left Albanian citizenship belong to the 30-39 age group./ Monitor
