4 ways to avoid spring viruses

With the arrival of spring, respiratory viruses are appearing more and more frequently in the population, especially in children and the elderly. Temperature changes, seasonal allergies and a decrease in immunity accumulated during the winter are some of the factors that, according to experts, promote the spread of these infections.

According to a study published in the journal Lancet Respiratory Medicine (2023), the viruses that spread most during the spring are rhinovirus, common coronaviruses (not COVID-19), and parainfluenza virus. These cause flu-like symptoms: cough, runny nose, sore throat, and, in some cases, mild fever.

An analysis by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) shows that, in recent years, spring viruses have become more persistent due to climate change affecting the cycles of virus spread. Also, increased travel and social contact after winter favors the spread.

How to protect ourselves?

Doctors recommend:

• Frequent hand washing.

• Avoiding closed and overcrowded environments.

• Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, with nutrition rich in vitamins C and D.

• Consult a doctor if symptoms last more than 5 days or worsen.

Spring is not only the season of flowers, but also a period when the body needs more protection. Taking care of your health and being informed about viruses is key to having a safe season.
