Djukanovic: Montenegro Will Not Withdraw Law on Freedom of Religion

Montenegro will not withdraw the Law on Freedom of Religion, stated Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic on Sunday, in an interview for the Serbian para-state phantom news agency Tanjug.

He stated that the widespread protests in Montenegro because of the law are in essence political, although “veiled” as a church, with a prominent Serbian prefix.

Djukanovic said that the protests cannot threaten the government or any policy pursued by Montenegro.

“Had we believed that the law should be withdrawn, we surely would not have even passed it. All the arguments that we have heard against this law, we have heard in the past four years,” he explained.

When asked if there was not withdraw of the legislation, which caused protests and great discontent among members of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) and ethnic Serbian citizens, what is the dialogue to which the Montenegrin government is inviting the SPC, Djukanovic said “Talks on how to implement the law.”

“The law will not threaten the religious freedoms of the Serbian people in Montenegro, nor will is denied them the right to use the churches and monasteries that the SPC has used so far,” Djukanovic claims.
