Comedian Richard Belzer passes away

The comedian known for his role as the "Law & Order" detective, Richard Belzer, has died at the age of 78. Belzer died Sunday (February 19) at his home in Bozouls, France.

The actor was famous for his role as Munch, appearing in numerous shows including Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: SVU.

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Belzer realized his affinity for comedy during a childhood in which his mother abused him and his older brother, Len. She suffered from depression. When Richard was a teenager, his father and brother committed suicide.

"The kitchen in my house was the hardest room I ever worked on," Belzer told People magazine in 1993.

Kicked out of Dean Junior College in Massachusetts, Belzer began doing stand-up in New York in 1972. He made his big screen debut in Ken Shapiro's 1974 film The Groove Tube, a Chevy satire Chase which was developed by the Channel One comedy group.
