Skype is shutting down after more than 2 decades

Skype, the iconic Internet chat and telephony service owned by Microsoft, will shut down on Monday after about 22 years of service.

A group of engineers launched the popular chat app and Microsoft acquired it in 2011. On February 28 of this year, Microsoft announced that Skype had reached the end of its lifespan.

"Starting in May 2025, Skype will no longer be available," the announcement said.

Microsoft offered users the ability to sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with their Skype accounts to stay connected to all their conversations and contacts.

The statement said that with Teams, users will have access to the same core features they use on Skype, such as individual and group calls, messaging, and file sharing.

In a separate statement, it added: "After May 5, 2025, Skype Dial Pad will be available to remaining paid users from the Skype web portal and within Teams."/ AA .
