'Over 100 cases of syphilis in the country'/ Doctors: Men aged 20-40

Syphilis, one of the life-threatening infectious diseases, is spreading rapidly among sexually active age groups and mainly among men.

Clinical infectious disease specialist Arjan Harxhi said that so far over 100 people have been registered with this disease in the country, and according to him, 95% of them are men, mainly aged 20-40.

Harxhi added that the main antibiotic for this infection is not on the list of reimbursable drugs nor registered with the Drug Control Center.

"From a study we conducted, there are over 100 new cases that have been followed up at the infectious disease service, mainly in patients who also have HIV. It is found massively in men, over 95% of cases. The most affected age group is 20-40 years old. It is a serious situation since syphilis during pregnancy can have serious consequences for the child ranging from abortion to congenital deformities. Just one case of a pregnant woman with syphilis is enough to serve as an alarm bell. Benzathine-penicillin, which is the main antibiotic that treats this infection, should be more available, as it is neither present on the list of reimbursable drugs nor registered with the Drug Control Center, but has been available thanks to import with permission", Harxhi.

The new situation created by this disease, once extinct, requires, according to doctors, new strategies in diagnosis and treatment. Otherwise, the consequences with these rates of infection will increase, with high costs for life.
