Iran claims massive espionage operation against Israel: We will release information and strategic documents with sensitive content

Iran claims massive espionage operation against Israel: We will release

Iran's state broadcaster IRIB has reported on what it described as one of the "largest intelligence operations" in history against Israel, claiming that Iranian intelligence has obtained a wealth of "sensitive documents" - including thousands related to Israeli nuclear projects and centers - from inside Israeli territory.

The television station interrupted its regular programming on June 7 to announce the news. It said the operation involved extracting “a wealth of strategic and sensitive information and documents” from Israel, citing unidentified “regional sources.”

The documents were reportedly transferred to Iran after a period of time to ensure safe travel. IRIB said the amount of material was so large that analyzing it would take considerable time. The broadcaster also linked the recent arrests of two Israeli citizens - Roy Mizrahi and Almog Atias - to the intelligence operation.

Although the arrests of Mizrahi and Atias have been confirmed, no independent evidence has been publicly provided to substantiate IRIB's claim of a massive leak of nuclear-related documents. Israeli authorities have not reported on the matter. These claims come six years after a high-profile Israeli intelligence operation inside Iran.

In 2018, Mossad agents stole nearly 100,000 documents from a secret facility in Tehran, revealing details of Iran's covert nuclear weapons program. The documents were verified by international experts and released by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which appears to have contributed to the United States' withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal signed by Tehran and world powers.

The latest Iranian claim – whether credible or exaggerated – points to an intensification of espionage activity inside Israel in the past year. The Israeli Shin Bet agency has reported an increase in Iranian-led espionage plots, with more than 30 Israelis arrested on suspicion of working on behalf of Iran.

Iran and Israel have been engaged in shadowy conflicts for years, including cyberattacks, targeted assassinations, drone operations and acts of sabotage. Tehran accuses Israel of being behind the killings of several Iranian nuclear scientists, while Israel accuses Iran of supporting regional militant groups and orchestrating attacks on Israeli interests abroad.

The United States and Israel - considered the only Middle Eastern state with nuclear weapons - are at the forefront of Western accusations that Iran is seeking a nuclear program. Iran denies the allegations, saying its nuclear program is for civilian purposes only./REL
