Trump-Musk clash risks sinking NASA, biggest cuts in its history

A political clash between President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk is severely affecting the future of NASA. A major bill on public spending has sparked fierce controversy, while the White House's proposals to cut NASA's budget have been described as the "biggest crisis" in the history of the American space program.

The space agency has submitted a formal budget request to Congress, proposing a drastic reduction by nearly 25% of funding, including cutting science projects by almost half. Over 40 planetary missions, many of which are already active in space, are in danger of being shut down due to operating costs, despite the fact that the most costly stages of development have already been completed.

Meanwhile, President Trump has threatened to withdraw federal contracts with SpaceX, Elon Musk's company, which is currently NASA's main partner for supplying the International Space Station and projects to return man to the moon and send him to Mars. SpaceX, with the Falcon 9 and Starship rockets, has offered cheaper alternatives to NASA's expensive SLS system, which costs over $4 billion for each launch, compared to just $100 million for Musk's rockets.

Analysts warn that the approval of this budget will fundamentally change NASA's focus, stopping scientific research and focusing only on the exploration of the Moon and Mars. The only area that benefits from an increase is the program for sending astronauts to Mars, with an additional $100 million.
