African heat hits Italy, temperatures expected to reach 40°C

Starting on Sunday and especially during the next week, the second heat wave for this early June will arrive in Italy, much more intense than the first, with temperatures expected to reach up to 37°C in most of the country.

Meteorologist Mattia Gussoni from the iLMeteo.it portal confirms the formation of a hot atmospheric block for the coming days. It is a special configuration that will bring the extension of the African anticyclone for thousands of kilometers from south to north.

According to Gusson, weather conditions will remain almost unchanged for several days: plenty of sunshine and lack of precipitation in the vast majority of regions. "Italy will be at the heart of this high-pressure 'bubble'," he says.

From Sunday, June 8, the sun will shine in almost all regions, however, there remains the risk of an isolated storm in the central-eastern Alps, which could also extend to the Friulian plains. A new phase of abnormal weather will begin next week: in addition to plenty of sunshine, a strong heat wave is expected to affect the entire country during the first half of June.

Temperatures are expected to be several degrees above average, bringing scorching heat to more than half of Italy. More specifically, from Tuesday, June 10, temperatures of up to 36-37°C are expected in Tuscany, Lazio, Molise, Basilicata, Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria – even up to 40°C in the interior areas of the two large islands.

In the rest of the regions, the heat and humidity will be noticeable, with temperatures reaching 33-34°C in cities such as Milan, Bologna and Rome. These conditions will last throughout the week, from Monday, June 9, to Sunday, June 15. “For the moment, no significant change in this atmospheric block is expected – at least not before the last ten days of the month,” adds Gussoni.
