Greek seismologists concerned after earthquake on Mount Athos

The 5.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Saturday afternoon on Mount Athos caused concern among Greek seismologists, writes Protothema.

According to the Geodynamic Institute, the focus of the earthquake was at a depth of 12.5 kilometers, and the epicenter was located nine kilometers west-northwest of Karja.

The President of the Hellenic Association for Earthquake and Disaster Prevention, Efthimios Lekas, spoke to ERTNews regarding the strong earthquake.

According to him, the recurring seismic activity in the fissure, which experts estimated had subsided last year, is now returning with stronger tremors, which is causing concern.

According to Kostas Papazahos, professor of seismology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, for the Voria.gr portal, this is a classic surface earthquake that occurred in the area near the Dokiyari Monastery.

He predicts strong seismic activity in the coming hours.

"In the same place, we had a sequence that has been going on for several months. We have the same microseismic sequence and now it has produced a magnitude 5.3 earthquake," Papazahos said.

According to him, according to initial reports, no major damage was recorded in monasteries such as Xenophon and Karea.
