The tragedy deepens in South Korea, over 150 people lost their lives

More than 150 people were killed and about 100 injured in a chaotic situation when a crowd flocked to a central neighborhood of the South Korean capital Seoul for Halloween celebrations on Saturday night, a fire official said. A large number of people collapsed on a narrow street during Halloween celebrations, said Choi Sung-beom, head of the Yongsan Fire Station. The death toll may rise as rescue efforts are still ongoing.

"The area is still in chaos so we are still trying to figure out the exact number of injured people," said Moon Hyun-joo, an official at the National Fire Agency. Among those who were sent to hospitals there were also foreigners.

Many of the victims were young women in their twenties, Mr. Choi said. Witnesses described chaotic scenes and police present to maintain order in anticipation of the Halloween parade had difficulty maintaining crowd control.

It was the first Halloween parade in three years, since the country lifted its COVID restrictions and physical distancing. Some witnesses described the crowd becoming increasingly unruly and disorderly as the hours passed. President Yon Suk-yeol chaired an emergency meeting with top officials and ordered emergency medical teams to the area, his office said. Authorities said they were investigating the exact cause of the incident./VOA/
