US Official Palmer: Russia Does Not Want Western Balkans to Progress

Deputy assistant of the US Secretary of State Matthew Palmer said that Belgrade and Pristina could use the example of North Macedonia in resolving Kosovo issue.

“The goal of USA, EU, and countries in the region is the same – progress, while on the other side, the Russian influence favors corruption and the unsettled situation in these countries. The example of North Macedonia shows visibly how to resist the negative influence, take responsibility and end the stagnation, which is a recipe that could be implemented by both Serbia and Kosovo”, Palmer said in an interview for Radio Free Europe (RFE).

When asked if there was a unified policy of USA and EU regarding the Western Balkans region, Palmer said that absolutely nothing changed there.

“Like in the past quarter of a century, our goal regarding Western Balkans is… to aid the region to move further towards Western integrations and EU, to jointly aid states of Western Balkans to successfully implement a crucial set of reforms and changes that would aid them on their road to Euro-Atlantic integrations…”, Palmer emphasized and added that Russia “would perhaps rather see a region that is divided, in factions, where tensions are ruling”.

“The Russians would, of course, continued their actions like before, and their negative influence”.

“In order to be certain that the countries of Western Balkans could really resist this malign influence on their own, we must secure that their institutions are functional, that they are responsible, transparent and managed in a good way. And the USA is committed to this and we are really working closely with all governments and institutions in Western Balkans in order to achieve this goal”, Palmer concluded.
