Basha calls for the start of EU-Albania membership talks at EPP Assembly

Democratic Party (DP) Chair Lulzim Basha is attending the European People’s Party (EPP) Political Assembly in Brussels. He has met with EPP representatives from various countries who serve at the European Parliament and European Commission in leadership roles as regards foreign affairs policies and European Union (EU) enlargement.

Basha asked for their support to the opening of EU membership negotiations with Albania as an aspiration of Albanians, as well as a guarantee to building a democratic state, with separate powers and free voting. “The opening of negotiations is important because it would bring about an added EU oversight to help in separating politics from the crime that has now captured the state and to hinder persons of criminal records from running for office,” the DP Chair said, mention the cases of the Shkodra and Vora municipalities.

“As evidenced by the OSCE/ODIHR report on the 30 June monist and anti-constitutional vote, elections are neither free nor democratic,” Basha added. The EPP Political Assembly work will continue today as well, with an agenda focusing on challenges faced by Europe today and the preparations for the EPP Congress to be held in Zagreb this year.
