39 killed in latest Israeli attacks on Gaza

Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip have killed at least 39 people, mostly women and children, the Palestinian Health Ministry said on April 24.

Eleven people were killed when an airstrike hit a house in Gaza City on Thursday afternoon, raising the death toll from an earlier report of 28 fatalities.

Israel ended its ceasefire with Hamas – the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union – and resumed its air and ground war over a month ago.

Israel has also been blocking food supplies and other imports to the territory, home to 2 million Palestinians, since early March in an effort to pressure Hamas to release the hostages. Hamas has said it will release the remaining 59 hostages — 24 of whom are believed to be alive — only in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners, a long-term ceasefire and a complete Israeli withdrawal. Israel, in turn, has vowed to destroy Hamas.
