America lowers flags to half-staff in honor of Pope Francis

US President Donald Trump has ordered American flags to be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for the passing of Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88.

"The order applies to all public buildings and grounds, to all military posts and naval stations, and to all vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and in all States and Territories of the United States, until sunset on the day of the funeral," the official proclamation issued by the president states.

The order also includes all US embassies, legations, consular offices and other facilities abroad, including military bases and naval vessels.

At the White House, during the traditional Easter Egg Roll held on the South Lawn, the American flag had been lowered to half-staff since Monday morning, as a sign of mourning and respect.

Pope Francis' death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell in a statement released by the Vatican. "The Holy Father's entire life was dedicated to the service of God and his Church," the statement said, noting that Pope Francis taught humanity to live according to the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, with a special dedication to the poorest and most marginalized.

Pope Francis was elected in 2013, following the historic resignation of his predecessor, Benedict XVI. He was the first Latin American pope and remains a transformative figure for the Catholic Church.
