Why did Rama grow up?

Edi Rama's dizzying result, greater than any other time he has run as leader of the Socialist Party, raises a fundamental question: how is it possible that the more the unimaginable thefts of the ruling gang are proven, the more their votes increase? Are we a people affected by Stockholm syndrome, who worship our torturers? Do Albanians like to live without a living wage, without 24-hour water, without dignified pensions? Do they feel comfortable with those in power who lie to them about the promises they make? Or maybe Koka, Beqaj, Tahiri, Ahmetaj, Bllako, Veliaj are not the hated characters who have put their hand in their pocket, but the impossible heroes, like the ones they dream of becoming?

All of these questions arise naturally when someone tries to escape the hubbub of reporting minor electoral incidents and arguing over a contested ballot box.

Beyond these momentary quirks, there is a deep dilemma that requires explanation. How can it be justified that in 2013, when power was virgin and sinless, Rama received much less? Why did the first mandate (2017), which he ended without any major scandal, and the second (2021), which was not as tainted as today, turn out worse than this May 11th? So, how is it possible that the greater the sin, the more inflated the result?

All the supporters of the government who seek to justify this paradox avoid blaming a people who have lost the reflexes of democratic reaction. In their desire to be politically correct, they have found another alibi to justify this anomaly.

They say that things have really deteriorated, but for this it is the fault of an opposition that cannot constitute an alternative. Of a Berisha who has captured the party and uses it for his own personal interests. Of some ordinary officials who fail to inspire. Of former rulers to whom the electorate cannot give a second chance to re-marry. So not that Rama is better, but that unfortunately there is no one better than him.

But, if this strained alibi has been able to survive as food for fools for almost 12 years, this time, after these elections, it no longer holds water.

Why? Let's think about it calmly. Let's accept the arguments of all those who talk about Berisha being old and unreliable. Let's also accept the accusations of an immoral opposition, which also protects the interests of the oligarchy and therefore has lost public support. Let's be convinced of a DP that cannot be renewed and that has difficulty producing new ideas. 

Por, sërish kjo fabul nuk funksionon. Sepse në këto zgjedhje, ndryshe nga të gjitha të tjerat para tyre oferta opozitare ishte e plotë. Dikujt që si pëlqente PD-ja, por ishte i djathtë, mund të votonte Mundësinë e Agron Shehajt, që përveçse superliberale ishte dhe e pakorruptuar, me një fushatë moderne dhe me djem e vajza të që s’kishin të sharë.

Ata që për bindje nuk e çonin dot votën djathtas, kishin një alternativë të mrekullueshme social demokrate, si Lëvizja Bashkë e Arlind Qorit, me aktivistë të spikatur në mbrojtje të kauzave qytetare dhe me një klithmë të vazhdueshme për barazi shoqërore.

Kush i trembej traumave që riskojnë të shkaktojnë  ideologjitë mund ta çonte votën e protestës tek çifti Lapaj-Shabani, thjesht sa për të konfirmuar se nuk bie dakord me mënyrën se si po shkojnë gjërat në Shqipëri.

Por jo, pavarësisht se oferta opozitare ishte këtë radhë më e larmishme sesa kurrë, Rama u rrit edhe më shumë. Bashkë me të u konfirmua edhe PSD e Tom Doshit, që përdor në niniaturë të njëjtën teknologji për mbledhjen e votës. Pra mjafton kaq për të vërtetuar se fabula sipas të cilës “rilindja fiton pasi nuk ka alternativë”, është një ushqim bajat për budallej. Megjithëse mundësia për të shprehur votën kundër këtij pushteti kësaj here ishte e pamatë, ai doli, përsëri, më i fortë se më parë. 

Natyrisht që kjo anomali e ka një arsye. Ajo nuk ka të bëjë aspak me dobësinë e opozitës berishiste, por me të vërtetën e madhe se në 2025-ën pre e vjedhjes nuk ra vetëm PD-ja, por barabar me të edhe Arlind Qori, Agron Shehaj e Adriatik Lapaj. Kur thuhet kjo nuk duhet imagjinuar rrëmbimi i thjeshtë i votave duke thyer kutitë.

Jo, jo, manipulimi është më i madh. Ai ka të bëjë me prishjen e rregullave të lojës dhe shkallmimin e çdo premise demokratike që mundëson një garë të barabartë e të ndershme.

Në këto zgjedhje dështuan të gjitha ato kundërpushtete që duhet të ruajnë ekuilibrin midis palëve. Në mënyrë qesharake u baltos SPAK- që me teatrin e Task Forcës së vet, sapo i “konfirmoi” shqiptarëve se në Shëpipëri nuk ka vjedhje, blerje apo trafikim të votës. Po të shohësh si u shfry tollumbacja e Dumanit, i cili u bë konfirmuesi i parë i këtij rezultati marramendës, madje para OSBE-ODHIR-it, e kupton më mirë këtë.

Një tjetër pushtet, që në një demokraci reale duhet të luajë rolin e watchdog u zvenit edhe më shumë këtë fushatë. Kësaj here ndodhi e paimagjinueshmja. U mbyll një garë elektorale ku nuk u organizua asnjë debat televiziv, apo ku nuk u bë një emision i plotë investigativ me temën më bazike: “Si është qeverisur vendi këto katër vite”. Cila qeveri e një vendi demokratik do ta kishte ëndërruar një luks të tillë? Cili autokrat nuk do ishte trajtuar po kështu?

Let's take an example. Agron Shehaj, thanks to his abundant finances, had the privilege of friendly media treatment. He and his close associates were given gentle interviews and sympathetic portraits. But never, never, did this generosity extend to the denunciations he made against government scandals, about those who die from lack of medicine, about strategic investors, about road concessions. So those who think he was privileged are mistaken. He was equally censored, because he was allowed by the media to be trendy but was not accepted as an oppositionist. Because in this country, dealing with the government is taboo.

This could serve as one of hundreds of thousands of fables about why, despite having much to offer from the opposition, a power that is evil, while being both predatory and arrogant, continues to grow.

The story is simple: because fair and equal competition is dead. If you add to the failure of other powers, such as the judiciary and the media, the power of criminal gangs to deceive voters, the financing of vote buying with black money, the transformation of the administration into a party army, as we saw in the video in the office of MP Braçe, everything becomes more complete. It is there that the answer and dilemma of how it is possible that Rama, the more he is discredited as a kleptocrat, the more he increases in votes: the reason is not that we do not have an opposition, but that we do not have democracy.
