Europe will not be part of Russia-Ukraine peace talks, US envoy says

Europe will not have a seat at the table for peace talks in Ukraine, Donald Trump's envoy for Ukraine said on Saturday, after Washington sent a questionnaire to European capitals asking what they could contribute in terms of security guarantees for Kiev.
Trump shocked European allies this week by summoning Russian President Vladimir Putin without first consulting them or Kiev and declaring an immediate start to peace talks, Reuters writes .

Trump administration officials have also made clear in recent days that they expect European NATO allies to take primary responsibility for the region as the United States now has other priorities, such as border security and countering China.
The U.S. moves have raised fears that Europeans could walk away from a peace deal that would also affect their security, especially if it is seen as too favorable to Russia.
Kellogg told a global security conference in Munich that the United States would act as a mediator in the talks, with Ukraine and Russia as the two protagonists.

Meanwhile, France is discussing with its allies the possibility of holding an informal meeting between European leaders on Ukraine to discuss these issues, although nothing has been decided at this stage, a French presidency official said on Saturday.
