Russia sends representatives to US for talks for first time

Ukraine has long sought security guarantees. A special envoy from Moscow during a visit to Washington at least did not rule out options for this. However, Kremlin spokesman Peskov played down the debate.

After talks in the US capital, Washington, Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev did not rule out security guarantees. The confidant of Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with Fox News that he focused on the economy and could only speak hypothetically on the subject.

"But I think, as our president said, it is not possible for Ukraine to join NATO."

"Some security guarantees may be acceptable in some form ," he added. Asked whether Moscow would condition the ceasefire on the lifting of sanctions, Dmitriyev, who heads the Russian State Direct Investment Fund, said Russia had not yet requested any lifting.

Peskov: Security guarantees part of talks

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not say anything new, refraining from commenting on possible security guarantees. "This is a very difficult topic," the Kremlin spokesman said, according to the Russian news agency Tass.

"This is part of the talks and consultations."

But for now, it is not possible to talk about anything concrete in this context. Dmitriev was the first Kremlin envoy for talks in Washington since the start of the war in 2022. According to US media, sanctions imposed on Putin's special envoy for economic cooperation with other countries were temporarily suspended for this visit./DW
