Italy/ 51-year-old Albanian sentenced to over 6 years in prison for domestic

A 51-year-old Albanian citizen has been sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in prison by Italian authorities, following charges of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Italian media report that the convict, with a previous criminal record, was arrested following an investigation launched by a complaint from his ex-partner.

According to the investigation, the Albanian is accused of having systematically exercised physical and psychological violence against his wife and minor daughter during the period 2018-2023, forcing the woman to live in a permanent state of fear and insecurity.

After the initial arrest and placement under house arrest, the Italian judicial authorities decided to transfer him to the Ragusa prison, where he will serve his final sentence.

The case has brought to light the issues of domestic violence and abuse that often remain undetected for years, until victims find the courage to report it.
